No, New Zealand does not need nuclear power. We have plenty of cheap, safe, renewable energy sources at the ready. Chief among them offshore wind power which this muppet is pushing away in favour of seabed mining. Also, awful to see him ramping up the climate denial, racism, and xenophobic discourse. They might smell election time coming. @lightweight @pezmico I think nuclear is pretty much obsolete now compared to wind and solar...

@va2lam @pezmico yes, entirely. It's simply not cost-competitive, and doubly so given gov't's demonstrated (globally) inability to deal with resultant waste responsibly for more than a few years (no where near half-life). And especially not so in the 'shaky islands'...

@lightweight @pezmico opportunity for corruption. It's not as if the renewable energy people donate to NZ First, but the nuke people might.

@lightweight @va2lam @pezmico we would have to send it somewhere like France to be processed in their breeder reactors. Two problems with that: it's too dangerous to ship that far and they probably don't want ig or can't actually process it. Most reactors seem to have a lot of hot waste in tanks right next to them. Fukushima had those. Bad idea.

@moz @pezmico I suspect that the folks who're oil-rich want to see nuclear as the next step, and I think NZF would parley that dirty dinosaur $ into nuclear - lots of white elephants.
