@publicvoit I definitely get it, I keep moving to and back from NixOS, but Debian, Ubuntu or Fedora don't cut it for me anymore. I thought that I was done with distro hoping after 20 years but it looks like I'm back on that bandwagon...

@publicvoit I can totally relate to most parts. The learning curve for NixOS is really steep.I switched from Debian to Nix for my mail server and for my web server. For me that was one of the best Ideas I ever had. (At least till now.) The mail server is now really easy to configure and to manage. With Debian it was a nightmare to set it up, and it would have been an even bigger one to upgrade to Trixie. But also: I will absolutely not use Nix as a Desktop System. Oh no! I am way more interested in a working desktop than in learning Nix.But also: I fled from Ubuntu to a rolling release distribution because of major problems every single Ubuntu upgrade. Upgrading my Debian webserver was also always a nightmare. I wouldnโ€™t think of going back to a versioned distribution for my Desktop.

@publicvoitFor me the reason to leave NixOS was the fact that it did not use the Filesystem Hierarchy Standars which lead to additional effort to get some applications to run. So I can relate to your point and I also switched back to Debian + XFCE. I also see why people stick to NixOS and are happy with it.

@dexternemrod I was fully aware of the FHS-issue before I switched. To my surprise, this was never an issue to me AFAIR.

@publicvoit @dexternemrod Actually, NixOS and similarly Qubes OS were non-starters for me because they were literally not compatible with my old eyes. Nowadays, I require a certain level of configurability when it comes to the display, e.g. zooming (and be it via selecting a non-native resolution for the display), contrast, etc. Not having an option to fix that during the installation or at least immediately after the installation, without spending much pain setting it up, was a non-starter.

That's highly irritating, as both would have been quite on my wavelength. But the usability issues make it a problem.
