@gwenn It's quite a messy situation to be honest. Most Android TV boxes are relabled China devices, such as the Nokia and Thomson boxes (same company selling those). You still find China telemetry components in the OS. Default Android TV launcher is full of ads but can be replaced by alternatives. There doesn't seem to be a proper FOSS alternative though. Updates for the OS are rare, if you get any at all. Most boxes available China devices full of bloat. Oh an a Google account was mandatory on my Nokia 8000 for the initial setup. Could be removed afterwards. 🤷 https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/nkboqd/list_of_alternative_launchers_for_android_tv/I still seek a clean, well working alternative device. Seems to be super hard, already searched the #Jellyfin forum for recommendations but I haven't seen a good fit for this yet.Sigh, maybe it's just for the best to completely ignore #AndroidTV and go for #LibreELEC with the Jellyfin plugin for #Kodi or the Jellyfin web UI or Linux app. Scaling at high resolutions seems to be messy though...

@cryptgoat @gwennThe reddit link is four years old. The recent update to my Nokia box has made it impossible to replace the default launcher. Avoid this junk!Long thread here:https://www.avsforum.com/threads/homatics-box-r-4k-plus-rocktek-g2-nokia-8010-dune-hd-sei804xx-owners-thread.3270060/

@leffe aRediit link has received multiple updates over the years. Results pretty much matched up with my own search for alternatives.Gotta check my Nokia box for a custom launcher then. Ughhh. 🫠@gwenn

@gwenn Is said to be one of the cleaner and well supported devices but its hardware is pretty much ancient compared to other devices, lacking support for modern codecs. Wouldn't pick up such a device for the full price right now.

@gwenn If HEVC/H265 is good enough for you, you will be fine.Update support is premium: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/shield/software-update/ There is nothing like this on the market.

@cryptgoat it would be great to have some package manager property working on Androidtv. As someone that didn't create a google account into it for the store and updates to work, it's been a horrible experience updating and installing things manually with adb. The other alternative stores are really really bad and barely work. I have one kinda doing updates for what is already there, but sucks really bad as usually everything with tv UI does.

@vascorsd I have been using the regular #FDroid client until now, the navigation is shit and it is also quite unstable but it keeps updating my apps just fine.I don't know how well #Obtainium and #AuroraStore work though.

@cryptgoat they all suck. Tried them all. Navigating with the remote control always leads one to lose the position eventually and not be able to select anything anymore. The UI is just plain bad for them all for TV usage. Most of them are also extremely slow with the downloads and tracking if they are done or not.

@leffe Btw, had no trouble setting up Projectivy via Accessibility settings on the Nokia Streaming Box 8000 (still on Android TV 12). @gwenn

@cryptgoat @gwennYes, it worked on Android 12 - although that version had other bugs that I've now forgotten about. The problem I'm taking about is with Android 14.
