someday I'm going to be in a life or death situation and the only way out will be to know how to get a window back onscreen when it's stuck offscreen*, on windows.the knowledge of how to do that is VITAL to my future. * it can happen for many reasons, but the easiest one is that it's on a monitor that's not plugged in or is off. Usually Windows will realize this and move them back onscreen... but not always.

the answer is:right click the icon/window on the taskbar, select move, push an arrow key, and then move the mouse and click back on your primary screen

@foone is it the alt+space, press M, press an arrow key, then use the mouse, which the window will now be attached to?

@foone on modern* windows you can also win-left / win-right to do the screen snap shuffle

@gsuberland I didn't think that'd work, it'd just resize on that off-screen display, but I guess you could move it onto a visible screen. cool!

@foone I haven't been able to make this work with right-click on taskbar for a long time - maybe because of grouping? But focus, alt-space, m, arrow key and then mouse keeps working

@zanchey if they're grouped, you have to hover until it shows the window previews, then right click on the preview instead of the icon.

that advice is 4-5 windows versions old so there's other ways to do this now.but this method works all the way back to windows 98 (windows 95 didn't support multiple monitors...*)* this isn't exactly true but shut up

@foone Alt+Space, M (for Move), then arrow key, then move the mouse also works and is my go-to. Also works great for windows that don't have a taskbar icon!

@foone Also you can use the Alt+Space thing on Win 3.1! Not useful because, as you say, no multi-monitor, but you still can!

@foone :awesome_rotate: Another thing that Windows has had decades to fix but hasn't. It's amazing that it literally has "windows" in its name but has no actual window management. It started as an unmanaged moras of windows and other than a couple of half assed additions, it still is.

@foone A thing that still works on Win11:Alt-tab or click the task bar icon to give the window focusAlt-m (to move)Press an arrow key (to tell it you really mean it) Move the mouse (the window is now stuck to the mouse cursor and you can move it into some visible position) Click the mouse (to finish)
