There is a reason hardcore nerds are often against tech like LLMs(AI) and cryptocurrencyWe know how the shit works-ish and what the real costs are 🤷 Same goes with "smart doorbell" this and "smart fridge" that, we do not want that stuffThe ideas behind it at the start are sometimes good and fun to play with but it always ends the same way, capitalize over everything elseIf you really want tech advise, listen to your nerds :nerdcat: We live for this stuff, good and bad

I see tech enthusiasm as something of a horseshoe pattern vs tech knowledge (in broad generality, obviously tons of exceptions)People who know nothing about technology tend to distrust and avoid it, using it as little as possible. People with moderate knowledge get very excited about new tech, become early adopters, and embrace new things uncritically. People with lots of knowledge about tech distrust it, and only adopt new tech when they decide the benefits outweigh the risks.@stux

Cryptographic and hashing algorithms have finite lifetimes because computers get faster. That is why cryptographic keys and certificates have expiration dates.Yet people who don't know much about crypto think blockchains are eternally secure, even though they are made up of digital signatures, which rely on hashing algorithms.I won't touch cryptocurrency with a 4096-foot pole.@stux

Like a handicapped friend, electric engineer, he arranged some home automation around Alexa.Mom recently got a smart TV - because of no choice. Doesn't have/need/want internet.The smartest things in my home: - smart TV (runs via PiHole)- The raspy sends msgs to NTFY when the WiFi power plug indicating the washing machine is doneFor most "smart" devices IMHO - no benefit for me. Dont want it.
