A beggar accosted me while putting my groceries in the car while I was with my kids.He lifted his shirt to show me some abscess on his stomach as a part of his tale of woe.I almost drew my gun; I didn’t know what he was exposing/reaching for at his waist.…and I live in a decent area.I told the guy pushing carts (who saw what happened) that he almost watched a guy get smoked and we both shared a weird nervous laugh. He said that guy’s there all the time panhandling.

@anon2451 I don't tolerate condescension, especially from newfags, newfag.I saw him and I clocked him as a vagrant (which was correct). What I didn't anticipate was his grabbing at his waist and lifting his shirt to reveal something to me in the middle of his talking.

In hindsight, I flinched.I should have drawn the moment the hair stood up on the back of my neck when he started lifting his shirt.I partially blame the communist state I live in for having bizarre-o gun "rulez", but most of all I blame myself for allowing that to factor into my decision making, even in a split-second slow-mo event like that.I won't hesitate next time; that's how you wind up dead.

And not to make excuses, but I'm currently wearing a holster for my non-dominant hand since my regular holster fell apart yesterday.I would have had to draw with my non-dominant hand which isn't something I'm practiced at doing, and in my head I was actively thinking about how I needed to put my dominant hand down to lift my shirt so I could draw with my non-dominant hand. It's possible I wouldn't have flinched were I wearing my normal holster.

@Killer_Mule I was well aware of what was going on around me. My initial judgement of the situation/guy turned out to be correct.I didn't hard fail here, I soft failed. If instead of lifting his shirt to reveal an abscess he'd revealed a gun or knife, considering I was carrying (appendix) with my non-dominant hand, it would have been a tough call who would've won out.I'll certainly feel better once I have my regular holster back.

@eriner Initial assessments are part of the process. That SHOULD color your later reactions. Saying "I will draw on anyone who raises their shirt near me" is not a solution.Whether you like it or not, you DO live in a communist state with stupid gun laws. Your kids will appreciate you more if you are not in jail for drawing on a harmless homeless guy. It's not easy. It's never going to be easy. It's trying to survive and live your best life. Don't throw it away for nothing.@Killer_Mule

@DaddyO @Killer_Mule > Saying "I will draw on anyone who raises their shirt near me" is not a solution.I've never said this. Not my assessment. The hair on the back of my neck stood up as he reached for his waist and lifted his shirt. I went into high-alert precisely because it is NOT normal for a stranger to accost someone in a parking lot and then raise their shirt as if they're about to draw a weapon. In that moment, I feared for the safety of my family. My instinct to draw was correct.

@eriner I don't know what the guy looks like. I don't know what the guy sounded like. I don't know how he was moving. So I can't offer any kind of advice on that one way or the other. Absolutely no judgment from me on that. But I do know you live in a state where if you were caught drawing your weapons on an unarmed homeless dude, the government would delight at trying their best to ruin your life.Just don't overcorrect, is all I'm saying.@Killer_Mule

@erinerThe other day someone who didn't speak great English approached me with a tire repair tool in his hand gripped like it was intended to be used. And he got very close. He just wanted to know if I had any plugs for it but I was on red alert the whole time

@DaddyO @Killer_Mule > the government would delight at trying their best to ruin your life.So what.Part of the slow-mo hesitation was contemplating the consequences of merely unholstering -- that was a mistake.I'm not going to let fear of the State get my family killed. If the hair stands up on the back of my neck and I fear for my/our lives, I won't hesitate again.I'd rather be judged by nine than my family carried by six.

@eriner Understood. You have to go the path you feel best. Just know, contemplated or not, those consequences do exist.Slightly related, I'm a fan of Craig Douglas at Shivworks and the classes he offers regarding verbal de-escalation and managing unknown contacts. I've watched his videos and online seminars, and hope to take one of his classes in person some day. Before I'm too old and decrepit.@Killer_Mule

@MSP_SMIMSA MD statutes on brandishing (though they don't call it that) have intent written into the statute.Very clearly in this circumstance (witnessed by both my wife, child, and at least one stranger), had I drawn, it would have been apparent that I had no intent to intimidate, incite fear, or threaten, but in response to what I perceived to be a threat to my/our lives. It's possible I'd have been charged merely for unholstering but unlikely I would have been convicted.

@HoneyBadgerSupreme @mrman I carry OC spray whenever I carry a firearm (read: always).I'm pretty sure the human formulations of OC spray are superior to "bear spray", but I'd have to look at two products in comparison to say that for sure.

@phifer He (the cart pusher) sighed and said to me "He does that all the time, even in restaurants", so I guess he'd seen the guy panhandling inside of a nearby eatery or something doing the same shirt-lifting exposure routine. He also said the guy in the wheelchair who says he lost his leg "in the war" actually lost it in a construction accident... and he drives a _very_ nice car.

@eriner my vaguely related story:WM alone, leaving. A Gypsy looking woman with a girl about 6-9 yrs old came begging. The woman came into the gap between my car and the next, with the girl behind her staying in the open area. I had a bag in my hand, and of course saw her a couple seconds before she blocked the path. She was just talking, but later I kicked myself for 2 things: She got that close without me dominating the situation verbally. Not looking behind me for another person sneaking up
