What Linux/FOSS-based hardware manufacturers do you think do the best job these days?#AskFedi

My 2c is that I'm happy with my System76 laptop and I think COSMIC is really cool. I'm secretly hoping they launch a linux phone eventually...

@gabriel While I've never bought anything from them, I'd say system76 would be top of my list. Them bringing hardware design in-house was a big plus in my book, and the development of a new DE to break the duopoly of KDE and GNOME adds to my feeling they take Linux seriously.

I am most interested in @frameworkcomputer but have not had hands on experience with their hardware yet. #framework #linux #foss

@gabriel Just really expensive for what you get. I decided to just get a used m2 max that was a year old. Less money, twice the hardware. And yes, I get what LiBeRtAriAns are going to say. But you're not escaping military surveillance, and if you want to do things that require a non trivial amount of vram, Mac is the only have in town still.

@matthew @frameworkcomputer @gabriel i'm itching for one myself. but the ship dates in q4/dec i don't know if i'll be in a space to work with the hardware at that time.

@gabriel if I had money, I would buy framework for sure. My initial impression of them is very positive.

@matthew @frameworkcomputer @gabriel I have a Framework 13 for 3 months now and I love it. I had a Dell XPS 13 before that, and tested lots of mainstream brands over the years (Lenovo, Acer, Vaio... and dinosaurs like PB, Toshiba). All within a budget of ~$1200-$1500. They all did a decent job and the XPS13 was certainly the best, but they all end up going to the trash because of hardware failure after 4 years max. I wanted to move to a company that cares about Linux and with Framework, hardware issues will not cause death of my machine anymore. I'll be able to have my machine longer, or upgrade it for a fraction of the price of a new laptop. https://www-gem.codeberg.page/sys_Framework13-1/https://www-gem.codeberg.page/sys_Framework13-2/

@matthew @frameworkcomputer @gabriel Also, along my research before opting for Framework, I've heard mostly about starlab, purism, tuxedo, and system76. There's obviously pros and cons for each brand as well as difference in opinions based on individual experience, but a common criticism for these (including Framework) less marketed brands is the price of their machines. Lots of people don't realize that there's reasons for a slightly high price.
