Anybody running a #Dell #idrac server in their #homelab? I bought one used recently and it came with a system name set to WIN-AFGAQLM38BR. I want to change the hostname. But all I have is the idrac web interface (or ssh to it) and linux OS (XCP-ng). How does one set that hostname? Also the service tag has been set to 1234567. That surprises me. I didn't realize that could be set.#selfhosting

@feld I am sure I do not have anything that would let me do productive work on a serial console. 😜@Toasterson

@paco @Toasterson yeah but you have to use the stupid Java KVM, right? I don't think iDRAC added an HTML one in that generation. And there have been situations where you can't get the stupid Java KVM to work which is why wrote this blog post in frustrationhttps://blog.feld.me/posts/2016/06/java-kvm-troubles-on-osx/

@feld I bought a used network card for a high power UPS. It arrived with a password set and the seller didn’t know it. They refunded my $20, which is what it cost to buy the whackadoodle serial cable that I needed. That was probably the first time I’ve used Kermit in 25 years.

@feld NOW you tell me. :) I spent about $3K on new UPSes about 9 months ago. I had 240V run to my garage, so I got 2 240V UPSes. I have a handful of small needs coming up. So maybe I'll get one of these next time I need one.

@paco Oh god, never buy UPSes new. Huge waste of money. These guys have quality gear and everything is fully refurbished and tested. I can't think of anything I received from them that didn't come in like-new condition. Also their deals on batteries are great, and you usually have the option to ship your bad ones back
