@tinfoil-hat you can pass link to mpv and it will play the video using yt-dlp, there are options in yt-dlp to use sponsor block too, I and don't use youtube's recommendation and primarily only watch videos when someone shares link. You can use rss to keep track of channels. I download videos since I don't trust youtube to keep them available.

@Pi_rat @tinfoil-hat >You can use rss to keep track of channelsI hear - from those plebs that are still addicted - that this has been nerfed recently, but I don't recall the details.

@Zergling_man @tinfoil-hat As expected(I don't use it, I remember names of channels I like), youtube is going to lock down everything behind "app" very soon I feel

@Pi_rat @tinfoil-hat As long as there's a way to transfer data from their server to your (>actually owning your hardware and software) machine, there's a way to do so on your own terms. But it's significantly easier to fuck with it than to counter the fuckery so, just don't use hostile services.

@Zergling_man @tinfoil-hat >As long as there's a way to transfer data from their server to your (>actually owning your hardware and software) machine, there's a way to do so on your own terms.Since couple of years I have had this exact musing, thinking of ways how they might counter it(while still providing "con"tent gratis).>so, just don't use hostile services.Amen!

@Pi_rat > You can use rss to keep track of channels.I was trying to do this some days ago, but found it to be inconvinient. i made a newsboat makro to open the youtube feed via mpv.

@tinfoil-hat @Pi_rat It's literally just yt-dlp for people who hate functionality.

@tinfoil-hat @Pi_rat Why did you bother asking, then?If you're going to proxy the request anyway, can't you just insert a thumbnail? RSS bodies are generally html, so images should be no problem. https://sandraandwoo.com/gaia does it IIRC, although my current client doesn't support it. And surely jewtube supplies a thumbnail URL somewhere.

@tinfoil-hat @Pi_rat Well I'm the wrong person to ask; I don't use any of it. I blacklisted youtube's domains in my hosts file so that even if I accidentally click on a link, they don't hear about it, and I filtered them out of my fedi client so I don't even see people posting them here (and nobody sends me links via IM anymore, because I always ignore them); if anyone really wants to show me something from there, they can copy it to their instance and link it from there. And honestly, I probably still won't bother opening it. Most videos on fedi aren't worth watching.

@tinfoil-hat @Zergling_man youtube is addictive like all corporate social media, easy way to stay off it is understanding how harmful proprietary software is.

@Pi_rat @tinfoil-hat :rms:I don't really get addiction; all I found on youtube that was worth it was music anyway, and it's less hassle to bulk download it with yt-dlp, or better yet, just torrent it. (And then clear it out after a month or so, or buy it on bandcamp, depending on whether I liked it.)
