The cybersecurity community on Reddit responded in disbelief this month when a self-described Air National Guard member with top secret security clearance began questioning the arrangement they'd made with company called DSLRoot, which was paying $250 a month to plug a pair of laptops into the Redditor's high-speed Internet connection in the United States. I spent a few days working with another researcher to dig into the history and provenance of DSLRoot, one of the oldest "residential proxy" networks with origins in Russia and Eastern Europe. Its proprietor used to call himself the "USProxyKing" on the forums, and built his proxy business through pay-per-install affiliate programs and by uploading booby-trapped cracked software and movies to the file-sharing networks.https://krebsonsecurity.com/2025/08/dslroot-proxies-and-the-threat-of-legal-botnets/

There's a crazy side story that isn't really related to this discussion about sketchy proxy networks, but does probably speak to the Redditor's gullibility and poor judgment:What's crazy is Sacapoopie's posts from months back, where he recounts an incredible story about being rear-ended and having his Toyota Corolla totaled while on the way to test drive a newer Corolla. Turns out, the Corolla he bought to replace the totaled one had been previously used in a homicide, and the cops impounded his ride.

@liquor_americanI do it sometimes in casual posts. Semi consciously; I'm thinking conversationally ("ten bucks") I've typed the 10 don't feel like editing and so type 10$. @jchaven @briankrebs

@liquor_american @jchaven This is what you get when you surrender your language to the world. Becoming a lingua franca has a price: losing control.

@ahltorpControl? Language? No one controls language. And spoken language is primary, not written. Written follows human usage. If there were to be a high standard for English overwhelmingly it would be Nigerians. @liquor_american @jchaven
