@alice @actuallyautistic On the other hand, it's true. I'm over 18. They can't do a single thing for me.I have an official diagnosis from a specialty place I sought out for their expertise with adults and women. It's about as solid as you could get.And yet, when I say I'm autistic, no one believes me. It's like they didn't even hear it. So tell me, just what is the medical system doing for me? Nothing. And that's official.

I'm certainly no psych, but I think the proper way forward is to stop bothering with psych diagnosing entirely. Mental health simply doesn't work in a neat taxonomy of conditions like other medical issues do. Rather than trying to split hairs to satisfy insurance companies and gatekeepers, or worrying about labels, we focus on, for example, @FinalOverdrive is having a rough time with life. How can we help xim live a better life? Therapy? Lifestyle adjustments? Accomodations? Meds? All of the above? There's no need to get so focused on formalized systems of labels - just focus on how to help people be their best selves.@alice @ideogram @actuallyautistic

@alice @actuallyautistic I would consider that all diagnosis is self-diagnosis (there isn't a blood test for it). The role of a medical professional is really to ask the right questions and understand the answers.

@aliceThat's an amazing document, thanks for putting it together. I feel that making a whole page about self diagnosis of autism is probably diagnostic of autism 🙃. @actuallyautistic

@moi @actuallyautistic @alice Gatekeeping is far more harmful than the occasional self-misdiagnosis. Eventually, those folks will figure it out and move on, after getting to know autistic people and developing a better understanding of what autism is, or seeing a professional and learning of their mistake. I lived for 13 years as a self-diagnosed autistic person before having the $$ to get a formal dx. Those years would have been way more difficult had I not been welcomed into the community as someone who belonged, considering that I did, in fact, belong.Nothing is getting watered down or becoming meaningless here.

@moi @actuallyautistic @alice Also, there is a very strong disincentive to get formally diagnosed right now, in the US, considering the proposed autism registry. Dangerous times. I won't have my kids diagnosed formally at this time.

@aliceMy self-diagnosis of ADHD (a journey recommended by my therapist) was the catalyst for my formal diagnosis. There’s a lot of validity in this.@actuallyautistic

@alice This has been my experience. I’m currently reducing my anti-depressant dosage, very slowly, under supervision.

@alice started the process of getting a formal diagnosis. My therapist asks 'why' and I wave my arms at my life and the confusion that reigns. Sometimes external validation is what I need to start validating myself.
