@Anonsfw @sun @waifu huhDon't you either need a CNAME for it and/or something in your web server configs? Possibly both or just 1?

@Anonsfw @sun usually the www part gets autofilled by the browsers, also DNS is slow so everytime you make a change you have to wait at least 15 minutes to validate them

@Anonsfw @waifu @coolboymew @sun With namecheap you don't need put anything in the host box if you want to resolve randomdomain.com to an IP. If you want to resolve www.randomdomain.com to the same IP, make a separate A and/or AAAA record and put www in the host box.

@Anonsfw @coolboymew @sun @waifu Or create a CNAME record, put www into the host box and put randomdomain.com. (trailing dot is important) other box like @coolboymew has.

@Anonsfw @waifu @coolboymew @sun Then don't make a wildcard (*) record since www is technically a subdomain and the wildcard will match all subdomains.

@Anonsfw @coolboymew @sun @waifu Actually, I was wrong, if you want only randomdomain.com for the A record, you have to put @ in the host like in picrel.image.png

@phnt @coolboymew @sun @waifu Another quick question, if I were to have subdomains on the server do I just make another record with the subdomainM

@Anonsfw @phnt @sun @waifu I think so. However I just have a redirection record right now so a subdomain just bring to something elseI don't do it often enough to be 100%, I always look it up as I mess with it unfortunately, but I'd imagine that instead of the @, it's the subdomain you want. If the subdomain uses the same IP, you gotta have that in your server configs I believe?

@Anonsfw @waifu @coolboymew @sun Yes. Ideally it would be a CNAME record which would point to the A record for the domain, if you are hosting both on the same box.So the setup would look something like this:A @ <IP here>CNAME subdomain example.tld.That way whenever you change the A record for your server, the subdomain also inherits that change since it's pointing to the A record.

@Anonsfw @waifu @coolboymew @sun You're welcome, also since you are doing subdomains on one box, you have to configure your webserver correctly to recognize them. In nginx that would be two different server {} blocks with one having server_name set to your domain and the other one having server_name set to subdomain.<your domain>.In Apache that would be two different <VirtualHost *:80> blocks with the same setup like nginx. Instead of server_name you have ServerName instead. And also the same configuration but for <VirtualHost *:443>. nginx doesn't need that since you can listen on multiple ports in the same server {} block.port 443 is HTTPS which requires more setup.

@Anonsfw @phnt @waifu @coolboymew @sun since browsers auto-fill that, you may want to have your web server auto-forward www to non-www

@bajax @waifu @Anonsfw @coolboymew @sun browsers haven't been auto-filling that for a while now. But it doesn't hurt to set up both and only use the non-www version.

@phnt @waifu @coolboymew @sun Is the server blocks you mean like two separate files for my configuration? I've been going with the guide on landchad.net this entire time and saw some guides about adding multiples of said files doing that.

@Anonsfw @waifu @coolboymew @sun You can have multiple server blocks in the same config file in nginx. Apache also supports that. To give an example with Pleroma here, I have one server block that serves fluffytail.org and www.fluffytail.org with its configuration. And then I have another server block which servers upload.fluffytail.org and media.fluffytail.org with a different configuration. And that's all in one config file called pleroma.conf. Then I have another config file called gitea.conf which has another configuration for git.fluffytail.org.

@Anonsfw @coolboymew @sun @waifu Here's an example of what I'm talking about. The only meaningful difference is that I don't host media on the same domain (example.tld) like this file has.https://git.pleroma.social/pleroma/pleroma/-/raw/develop/installation/pleroma.nginx?ref_type=heads

@s8n @phnt @waifu @coolboymew @sun I mean when you have a website that was hosted without the www it shows up in the searches and stays right there. When you go to the non www site it does not load the page unless you add the www, which all my links redirecting to the site is broken for now.
