@DMA A HOA eliminates the entire point of owning - control. If you're going to have a landlord ordering you around it's better to get the benefits of renting - the landlord has to fully maintain the property and you have the option of leaving, generally once a year, any time if you're willing to violate the lease or have tenancy at will.HOAs give you all the disadvantages or renting with none of the advantages.

@jb There are cultural aspects here. Some right leaning places are full of meddling wealthy assholes who want to ban every kind of fun because it attracts the wrong element. But then you have the typical California leftist who wants to ban the internal combusion engine entirely. Not too rich and not too left is the goldilocks zoning zone.

@jb @judgedread They snapshot our area twice a year to make sure no one is hiding anything from the property tax-man.(OTOH the Amish are probably the worst when it comes to code enforcement; when someone can spring a giant fuggin barn up in a day or two the government is caught in an unwinnable rearguard action so they don't even bother. This is both good and bad.)
