@teto I honestly wasn't, I fit more into the latter category. My main point was that government site data that is 50% higher than what the expected percentage indicates a massive sampling error. Looking at the specific site usage it's more likely that a bunch of linux bots are scraping documents and finding post office shipping statuses for businesses.

However, they also sound even more irritated when it comes to tech issues (apparently ActiveDirectory is a real pain in the butt), likely because their stack isn’t open source and they can’t just submit a patch when something is broken.

@teto @Verfassungsschmutz In the US a lot of Windows admin is Sharepoint (and now Teams and other shit) which involves a lot of corporate money so the pay is very good in general. You're not going to run into it a lot in Silicon Valley, but they're bread and butter jobs for most of the well-to-do companies all over the country.Now actual IIS/MSSQL/Hyper-V/Server admins, that varies, but sometimes those pay more than Linux sysadmin due to MS certs and the general rarity of them. Not that it's hard to admin Windows server shit, just that you have a bunch of paperwork that corpo brains like.

@teto @Verfassungsschmutz Yeah, in the US, outside of tech-sector specific jobs, the normal business drones are still very skeptical of anything that doesn't have a hefty enterprise licensing fee. And if it also has hefty certification fees for "engineers" then they love that even more. Diplomas and certificates get business retards rock hard since they think it's some kind of guarantee.Linux sysadmins are much more common over here due to hobbyist stuff. Other than a propensity to wear polo shirts, I haven't noticed much skill difference broadly between US Windows and Linux admins. But we also tend to put sysadmin in a different category to helpdesk at mid-size and up companies.

Here, the "fix your laptop" people are typically helpdesk, sometimes they're also the sysadmins, sometimes not. It depends heavily on company size but our Linux sysadmins would be expected to fix a Windows laptop if they're also helpdesk.On the actual admin (not helpdesk) side, I've met dudes whose primary work experience was in Windows houses, doing IIS/MSSQL/ASP.NET sysadmin and optimization, which is its own pain in the ass and I pity them because I've had to do it as well. They usually knew Linux sysadmin. Some don't. Some are shitty MSCE/Expert/Architect evangelists, but fuck those guys for other reasons.That said, I've ALSO met countless Linux admins who can barely `docker compose up` without their hand being held. Or who have some entrenched, backward obsession with the first thing they ever learned and refuse to advance with the tech (Perl, in 2020? Heck yes, brother!) or who tinker too much and cause problems. There's the full spectrum for everybody and not everyone's going to be as skilled or capable as you.

@eruwero @teto GNU/Linux is already extremely popular on desktop computers - although mostly as abominations full of proprietary software (including proprietary drivers and proprietary software from microsoft) that's little better than other proprietary OS's.It would be possible to push such "popularity" further without needing to do much (microsoft literally refuses to allow windows 11 to run on billions of otherwise capable computers and the receiving end of such artificial obsolescence will have the choice of either using windows 10 without security updates, using workarounds to install 11 (the computer may later stop working), or installing GNU/Linux) - at least it's less bad than windows - but it's still going in the wrong direction.

@lispi314 @teto @eruwero Convenience in allowing faster development always beats better design.If someone was to port all of Linux's drivers to Hurd and make the scheduler better it would be a viable Linux replacement.
