If you could pick a single technology from #StarTrek to bring to life in today’s world, what would it be? 🖖

@gedeonm I feel strongly that replicators would do the most good for current real world problems.Transporters? Just convenience.Holodecks? Entertainment.Warp? Fun, but meh.Replicators? Provide needed things that are otherwise difficult to obtain. Particularly food. Sign me up.

@leebennett @gedeonm No, transporters would *totally* disrupt all present-day personal transportation technologies. Basically point-to-point teleport booths are now a thing. It collapses logistic chains and destroys the automobile and civil aviation industries and 99% of trains and 80% of passenger ships in one fell swoop. (Historic trains and cruise liners might survive as recreational niches.) Disruption to automobiles and shipping axes another 50% of transport (moving fuel around). Etc.

@cstross @leebennett @tewha When post-scarcity meets scarce commodity. You can replicate food, water medicine and a whole lot of other stuff but not an official 1950s Willie Mays Rookie baseball card.😅“We work to better ourselves and the rest of humanity. What does that mean exactly?”
