They are characterizing empathy as emotional contagion, an extreme form of affective empathy.What they don’t understand by vilifying empathy is that in 1993 it took on the meaning of sympathy. @Nonilex The reason why I write it length about this is, I’ve been sort of chewing on the fact that conservative, elites, religious and business elites been on the attack in one former other since around 2010, with the effective altruism movement. It seems like the Christian right decided to draw on that movements vilification of empathy as emotional contagion, and dress it up in religious terms.

@Nonilex I think there are circumstances when empathy is a "sin".for example when normal people excuse powerful people for their dreadful actions, because "they must have some good reasons to do such horrible things" or "they are rich and powerful they don't need to do bad things, so they are not bad"there's a sin of empathy when normal people think that poweful people act with the moral compass of an average person.and for centuries powerful people have exploited "Christian Compassion"

@Nonilex I just read the article. It would seem, based (IMO) on my interpretation (and I am a recovering conservative evangelical) that empathy fails to be valid if a conservative Christian is accused of sinning or America is brought up as having a checkered past.

@Nonilex Yeah, I was raised in the church denomination associated with that "Sin of Empathy" guy, and they really do revel in cruelty.They sing/pray the "imprecatory Psalms" on the regular, and they delight in the violence of it. Imprecatory Psalms are the ones that ask God to hurt "evildoers" and even to destroy their children (dashing their heads on the rocks & similar colorful language).
