       TIL: #syncthinc may delete files because of a wrong file situation of a remote host even when the share is in status "Paused". 🤦‍♂️ 🖕

       @publicvoit To be honest - not that other (proprietary) services are any better. I think multiway realtime sync is just very hard problem and while it might look convenient I prefer less convenient manual induced sync where I exactly know whats happening.

       @blami @publicvoit :gitannex: #gitAnnex does this pretty well. It'll also keep all old versions of files in a read-only hidden directory tree until you tell or configure it otherwise and it'll stubbornly refuse to actually delete anything unless it can provably see there are N other copies elsewhere or you force it to. My synced files have never felt safer.But its noob-UX is kinda terrible compared to :syncthing: #Syncthing - it's first and foremost a cli program: :git: #git

       @nobodyinperson @publicvoit I actually use git-annex since its very beginning. It is awesome tool.

       @blami @nobodyinperson Can git-annex sync from any private LAN without exposing ports via any public IP/port?

       @publicvoit @blami It can run via tor (haven't tried though) and @joeyh recently implemented something that will enable syncing via magic wormhole and the like, so yes, kinda.

       @publicvoit @nobodyinperson it can do whatever git can do (I use regular remote as I VPN home) + it has concept of special remotes. From public network I guess you can use `tor` special remote (https://git-annex.branchable.com/special_remotes/tor/), or if you feel adventurous `p2p` special remote (tor is built on top of that).

       @blami @nobodyinperson Thanks. Then I think I know what to expect. Unfortunately, not a direct replacement for syncthing so far. 😔 I won't sync Terabytes of data in maybe 80 shares via Tor/VPN/... at the moment.

       @publicvoit @blami Now I'm curious, how do you sync your Terabytes of data then, when you apparently don't have a single self-controlled server online somewhere that clients can sync with, e.g. via ssh? The public syncthing relays? When I used those, speed was *terrible*, maybe that has changed since.

       @publicvoit @nobodyinperson Yeah, it's more like tool to sync workspace between computers (I use it that way) rather than tool to keep multiple NAS boxes in sync (if you ever find something more reliable than one-way rclone to do that let me know!).

       @nobodyinperson @blami Speed was never an issue with the public relays.Most of the time, I'm within the same LAN. If not, speed was sufficient as changes are sparse with small amount of data to sync.

       @blami @nobodyinperson So far, I need to stick to Syncthing (no promising alternative, no time for migration).

       @blami @nobodyinperson I've checked:94 shares, 3.51TB, 365k files.
