@meatlotion freedom of speech means the govt isn't going to gulag you for wrongthink.otherwise, one also owns the social consequences for their speech. so if everyone hates her now because of her speech, welp, thems the breaks.

@nico198X I agree, whatever we say or do will have social consequences, and we have to accept that. But that doesn’t mean our right to free speech should be censored or constrained. If I say something that causes offence, I take responsibility for it, and I accept that the person I offended might change how they see me.What I don’t accept is that anyone else, especially the government, has the right to decide what I can or cannot say.

@meatlotion it's really just about the govt tho. a company can fire you if they don't like what you say, for example.

@nico198X well they can't _just_ fire you, you have to have been through a process with them, and the process has to reveal that you damaged the reputation of said company enough to make dismissal the only option, otherwise they run the risk of an unfair dismissal tribunal thrown at them.

@meatlotion i'm sure it depends on the country, but sure.in any case, the idea of free speech is protection from the govt. otherwise, you're in the realm of social contract.
