I'm sure he's right. but what's the life of the truck, per the engineer? probably not much over 150,000 miles

@deprecated_ii all machines made by man will eventually breakI understand trying to extend the lifespan of a machine but good engineering always asks if it makes economical sense first

@Paultron-3030 for the last 20 years automotive engineers have been asking how they can artificially kill off vehicles, because they got too good at making them last an extremely long time with low production costsif carmakers could get away with it they would put bombs in the powertrain components to destroy them precisely at 150,000 miles or 10 years of age, whichever came first

@deprecated_ii well now they can as we move to cars as a service, monthly subscription fees will jump through the roof when they hit the legal limit for when they can quit making spare parts

@Paultron-3030 maybe they dream of that while they're jerking off, but that's not going to work out. the common man simply cannot afford it

       >good engineering always asks if it makes economical sense firstDisagree. Accountants are the ones looking at cost per unit. No good engineer wants to hear them say "make it cost less".

@MCMLXVIIOTG @deprecated_ii there is a level of design appropriate for each use case. I remember first year of school, they stressed coat as the downfall of many excellent projects and a concern second only to safetyYou make the best life changing tool or product, doesn't matter if no one can afford itYeah I hate cost cutting cheapening good designs but trying to make tiny high rpm turbos last 200k is not a good use of cost and design time, because even if people pay for the more expensive highly engineered turbo that time and money could have gone to other segments of the design that may have been relatively more worth it in most use cases

No doubt. I was just looking at the semantics. Engineers, left unchecked, would overbuild everything. 10X safety factor. So the accountants are needed. I just wish they didn't have to listen to someone saying the shareholders want a larger Q3 earning.

@MCMLXVIIOTG @Paultron-3030 @deprecated_ii this exercise of ego can be seen in most bridges and structures made in the 1800s and earlier. Imagine how silly the great men of the past would feel if you told him we could make houses out of cardboard and they wasted all that time on bricks and steel.

@Paultron-3030 @MCMLXVIIOTG these engineers are not just unable to make vehicles more repairable within their budgets. designing them TO BE economically unrepairable out of warranty is a specific, secondary design goal in automotive engineeringthere are no excuses to be made here. they're doing it on purpose

@Paultron-3030 @MCMLXVIIOTG toyota is choosing to use open deck blocks that warp easily. how much does that save them? a dollar worth of aluminum?toyota is choosing to sleeve their cylinders with no positive retention so the blocks can't be fly cut flat when they warp. how much does that save them? $0.15 per cylinder sleeve?and then they want $6000 for a bare block

       >and then they want $6000 for a bare blockCan buy an assembled SBC shortblock for less than that. New block, stroker crank, you name it.

@MCMLXVIIOTG @Paultron-3030 the bill for a V35A engine replacement including labor runs about $30k. nearly $20k for the engine itself apparently. mostly these are being done under warranty so farand even if it's fully covered by warranty it can take months for the dealer to get all the parts, during which you're driving a loaner yaris or some shitkinda looks like toyota took lean manufacturing a few steps too far

@deprecated_ii Turbo replaced once. Inframe rebuild around 1.5mil. Finally put a new engine in at 3mill.
