I was reading another long winded article about Plato and once again was reminded that his basic argument, that you are more free when ordered around by a wise ruler than when you do what you like, is fuckin' absurd except in edge cases like heroin addiction.

@judgedread You are always ruled by a government. You are more free when ruled by a wise king dedicated to your nation than if you are ruled by the merchant class who will put you in debt slavery and degeneracy under the illusion of freedom.

@judgedread I think Plato was retarded. Aristotle is the true intellect.

@anheim_secundus Facts. Aristotle never resorts to mystical obfuscation.

@Bernard That is true but Plato is arguing against desire in general. Basically your 'true desire' is to be happy, and the way to happiness is virtue... even if it ends with you being executed by slow torture. It's Talmudic in its absolute sophistry. Basically Socrates, speaking via Plato, is trying to put one over on his decadent listeners. In fact it's a lot better not to be tortured to death, that reflects true desire more than some airy fairy theory.

@judgedread Most people run on base instincts. Noble people are in the minority. Great rulers can inspire the base to live virtuous lives which brings greater happiness to them and the nation.I don't understand the slow torture part, but maybe you mean the struggle involved in living a virtuous life. This struggle results in self and group realization of greater achievement and enduring happiness. The books of the Talmud were written long after Plato. Some of the Talmud could be called Platonic, but you can't compare it the other way around.

@Bernard I'll link to the article I'm subposting about, not going to try to rewrite it here. It's on Counter Currents.

@Bernard Here's the dirty truth:It's better for the nation if Elon Musk had stayed with his first wife and had all his kids with her. It's better for Elon Musk in every way if he has a harem and keeps churning out kids to colonize the light cone... unless you bring in some notion of self sacrifice as a good in itself, which has been the project of philosophers and theologians and prophets for thousands of years. It's a noble con because the actual interests of the individual and the collective are often at odds and no amount of sophistry or revelation can patch this bug in the manifold.

@judgedread The discussion in The Republic is about how to best govern a nation (the collective). We are highly social creatures and only powerful in organized group. Jews taught us to value the individual over the collective to intentionally undermine the group/family/collective/nation. That is the con.

@Bernard Family reflects genetic interests, which are directly beneficial to the individual. It feels good to work for your wife and children because they are literally your key to immortality. Race provides this to a lesser degree, as race is a very extended family. But those selfish genes want what they want, and if you can hoard wives and mistresses rest assured it will make you happier than the dutiful incel working for the good of some abstraction. Here's the article, by the way.https://counter-currents.com/2025/08/why-plato-befrien...

@judgedread It is a good article although I am already quite familiar with these writings.I don't recall any discussion about polygamy, but banning polygamy is intended to help resolve the incel issue. If each man is allowed only one wife, there will be more women available and fewer incels. I do recall discussion about eugenics where they discuss encouraging the better or more fit to have more children while discouraging the unfit. They recognized that this would need to done secretly as it would raise upset by the unfit. Unfortunately we now live under tyranny by foreigners who are promoting dysgenics among us to gradually destroy us.

@Bernard My original post was set off by one point in that article, one that Johnson often repeats, probably because it's central to Socrates/Plato's argument. My polygamy argument is a stark example of something that is great for the personal pleasure and inclusive fitness of a man, but bad for all mankind for the reason you mention: Polygamy leaves some men with no woman and thus no stake in society.
