       @tao We are BROKE. Beyond broke. TRILLIONS in debt. As a mathematician, you should understand the simple arithmetic behind why continually funding endless research, some of which is frivolous, some of which is downright dangerous (gain of function research and the subsequent mRNA development would be a prime example) is simply unsustainable. In my own home, I don't buy expensive vacations, or even new computer hardware or subscriptions, useful as they may be, until the bills are paid.
