       @mjg59 Microsoft certainly did have plots to kill Linux at various times, peaking according to rumor with Windows XP.   They were in fact very bad at it.   An insider told me that MS's purchase of Hotmail motivated the change in attitude, since they saw how well Linux-based Hotmail worked.   I see their first kernel patch dates to 2011.

       @alison Yeah I think your insider friend is wrong, as by all credible accounts Hotmail was FreeBSD on the front-end and Solaris stuff on the back-end (and I mostly only heard about FreeBSD being used).

       @fwaggle @alison Hotmail was originally nonfreeBSD, which made working around bugs easy, as the maintainers could just quickly restart the server.Then microsoft ordered that Hotmail be moved onto windows and that made debugging suck due to windows brokenness and how rebooting windows took like 15 minutes.
