"And just as with EVs, policymakers have focused on infrastructure and affordability without paying any attention to the enshittification risks. Your rooftop solar will likely be controlled via a Solaredge box – a terrible technology that stops working if it can't reach the internet for a protracted period (that's right, your home solar stops working if the grid fails!)."@pluralistic, 2024https://pluralistic.net/2024/06/26/unplanned-obsolescence/#better-micetrapsHoly christ-on-stick, that's ludicrous!#enshittification #solar #SolarEdge

@strypey @pluralistic Not only might solar panels shut down due to a net or grid failure but HP printers on their "instant ink" program could also shut down. The inter-system dependencies of things are getting serious and it seems nobody is caring. And to add a cherry (as in "cherry bomb") to the cake, many of our security measures are making it difficult, often impossible, to get in and figure out what has gone wrong and to make repairs.

@karlauerbach> many of our security measures are making it difficult, often impossible, to get in and figure out what has gone wrong and to make repairs. You forgot the scare quotes around "security measures" ; Not being able to control, diagnose and repair a networked system, in a timely fashion, is kryptonite to any meaningful defintition of security. @pluralistic

@strypey @pluralistic Solar panels connected to grid must stop injecting current when grid is down to protect workers operating maintenance.

@thierrya> Solar panels connected to grid must stop injecting current when grid is down to protect workers operating maintenanceRead the article. This is clearly not what Cory is talking about. He means the solar controller will stop working, completely. The local system will not only stop injecting current into the grid it will stop moving it from panels to batteries. So once your batteries are too low to use you're without power until the net is back up, even though you have *solar panels*.

@strypey my bad I had an incorrect understanding of the goal of solaredge.
