Following orders is generally a fine defense, as long as your government doesn't lose a war.In the 1940s, there was millions of American and Soviet men who were prepared to die to ensure that the German government did lose.Nowadays, "Soviet" men are fighting in Ukraine, and American military age men are the ones joining ICE.Modern "Nuremberg Trials" are a theoretical imaginary concept.

No one wants to acknowledge that "Might makes right" is still the law of the land when it comes to Statehood and Morality. The ICC is a joke and base moral concepts vary more than people are willing to admit.

These institutions were designed to achieve more or less the same result, but without disrupting the mythology of the Universal Social Contract.Ut erat antea, sic manet.The only sin is not to win.

@cjd @Flowermob @hakui many empires did away with local elites, some even did not replace them with their own but just appointed new ones. Preferrably from a minority (British), strong (Byzantine) or random (Mongols, bc many men died before). The plebs always has gripes against the higher ups.
