@tomjennings I'd heard mutterings about it a few weeks ago, but didn't dig further. Given we're living in the dumbest timeline, I'm not surprised.

@tomjennings No ideas for the US, but that's what is happening in DE since several months when receiving DHL shipments from outside the EU. Ordered something for 11,50€ on Amazon marketplace from (accidentally) a CN seller. Had to pay 2€23 import duties plus 7€50 handling to received the part. I would consider this "the new normal" now.

@tomjennings Looked around a bit for news items about DHL specifically and came up empty. Make of that what you will.

@tomjennings There's nothing in German news about such a move. In April DHL stopped delivering packages to private recipients above a value of $800, but continued this for B2B. But those are the last "news" currently available.

@tomjennings I guess that screenshot is legit, but almost 4 months old. Trump in his usual way later suspended the scrapping of the de minimis rule: https://www.reuters.com/business/retail-consumer/dhl-suspend-global-shipments-over-800-us-consumers-2025-04-20/If you want to keep uptodate about the current situation, you may want to check DHL’s page on US tariffs: https://www.dhl.com/global-en/microsites-2-0/core/us-tariffs.html

@VE2UWY I later found a corporate news story saying the criminal in chief had signed an exec order (*) that abolishes de minimis for all countries to go into affect this week I think. If true, and executed, it will practically speaking delay packages by weeks to many months, in addition to adding a today unknowable fee upon delivery. The US has no infrastructure for this at scale. * It could all be illegal, prevented from becoming fact, he could change his mind, whatever. None of this is good.

@bizzl @tomjenningsthere are arguments in all sorts of directions about import regulations on individual shipment imports. whatever I say, I find myself exposed as hypocritical.basically I am angry about a loophole beeing closed. from which I gained profit from for more than a decade on a daily basis. And I am angry at myself for complaining about anti-globilization politics actually happening, just by the wrong people. And angry about health&safety regulations actually beeing enforced.

@adorfer I don't think there is anything for you to feel guilty or hypocritical about. I dunno. The de minimis thing benefited citizens. And saved govt money. There was a tiny, mild generosity to it. I won't repeat the DHS claims.I buy clothes from AliExpress. A weird floppy disk adapter thing from some citizen of France. After 29 Aug, probably can't, or vastly, impractically encumbered. This benefits who? or what?@bizzl

@tomjennings Yep. The DHL rep knew but corporate had yet to announce anything. Probably waiting to see if the Toddler-in-Chief saw something shiny and decided to deny he ever said anything. Now, of course, ALL the shippers are saying the same thing - "Sucks to be you-S-A."Lol. What a maroon. And people still believe there will be elections in the future.#BrainWormsKeepChewing
