       I posted this question a while ago and was surprised that I got zero responses (even "foolish question"!)Is there any qualitative difference in security, risk, tracking, whatever writ broadly, to an android phone, on mobile data only vs wifi only?

       @tomjennings assuming there is no "wifi-calling" SIM service, so the android is REALLY on Wifi only: No silent SMS possible.

       @tomjennings if you’re on wifi only, you’re not giving your nearly exact position to your provider all the time, if I understood the question correctly

       @adorfer I had no idea sms ping/silent sms existed but of course it does. I've been insufficiently paranoid. Very interesting. I'm not thinking I'm clever enough to make a stealth phone or anything like that. I'm just curious where the exposures are, approximately. And with this one thing I now know I know almost nothing. "Thanks" lol!

       @labria Thanks. Yes, that seems very likely. I wonder if mobile data really turns off, fully.

       @tomjennings if you’re only turning off “mobile data” you’re still very much pinging the towers. Airplane mode _should_ turn radio off properly, but not sure if it really does.

       @labria Oh right, right. I meant to say, "turn off radio" eg. airplane mode. My bad.

       @adorfer I guess I need to RTFM wifi-calling. Mine's enabled. I'll experiment with it.

       @tomjennings SilentSMS/StealthPing is part of the BasebandProcessor, which is a HardMac. The only way to turn that off is not to provide any SIM to the Baseband. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baseband_processor
