Do you work? Do you earn a wage?Could you stop working and care for yourself and your family on your investments and the property and businesses that you own? There is a pernicious idea in US politics the the "working class" doesn't include "professionals" (working class people with degrees) further there is a hazy notion that the real "working class man" must be a man and probably a white one. Everyone who works for a living is "working class"

Since I miss all three of those false markers, but still have been in unions and ... you know work I've experience endless dissonance when political conversations talk about "concerns of working class Americans" then pointedly exclude people like me. As if I am not riding the bus to work everyday. I'm sick of it.

@futurebird "You're a white man with a degree and a better-than-living-wage paycheck, so you must not be interested in labor-driven organizing"The most pernicious story that splits off some of the most powerful potential members for a broad union (white guys with decent pay)and it's a shit deal for us college-educated white guys, too. We lose the union & are rewarded with Jordan Peterson/Charles Murray flim-flammery about how we're just "superior at spatial rotation"

@futurebird TrashFuture have this running observation that "Working Class" in the UK has come to roughly mean "my family was working class in the 70s", which means the barista who works another two jobs to afford her rent in South London somehow qualifies as one of the elites because she went to university.Again, false signifiers which are useful to culture war fomenters, but insulting to everyone involved.

@futurebird @aud The number of times I’ve been told people with academic degrees aren’t workers, and/or shouldn’t unionize because it’s not blue collar by people who’d do well to recognize they’re part of the working class is non-zero

@futurebird Some people I know who are extremely online leftists have dismissed me as an academic as "PMC" and therefore not a real worker. It is so frustrating. If I don't work, we don't have a home, food, health insurance, etc. I'm in a union (utterly powerless because state employees in GA can't collective bargain). Any cost of living raise is entirely up to the state legislature. This shit is so pernicious. It is absolutely about dividing us to weaken our power.
