Maybe someone can explain this. Years ago I was in North Dakota..or maybe it was South Dakota or Nebraska, I forget. Anyway was on a road trip, and the tank was on 'E' so I drove into the next town I came to. But it was completely bizarre. There was nobody about. I don't even remember there being a car in front of a house. It appeared to be a town of maybe 1 to 5 thousand or so. IDK, I didn't go all throughout the town. Probably closer to 1000.Sometimes these towns can be interesting talking with a local and get some perspective on Americana.Anyway, I went to the town center. There was a grocery store with two gas pumps. But it was closed, and there was no credit card payment system, as the pumps were probably still there from the 1970s. The store was closed, and I walked up the road a bit, which appeared to be the main street in the town, but this was the strangest thing I've ever seen in my life. There was a jail cell barely enough to fit a man, but not to stand up in. Initially, I had thought it was like a tourist attraction or something like that. I walked up and expecting a plaque saying something like, "Billy the Kid was jailed in this cell for 5 days blah blah blah.." But there was none. And then it hit me, this thing was still in use.It was at that moment I decided I didn't want to be in this town any more and left. Driving out, I looked for any sign of life , but there was none. And it wasn't a ghost town, because it wasn't over grown with vegetation, as what would happen if nobody lived there. It was like 1000 unseen eyes were watching me at every moment.It was also a Sunday, so I did expect to have less activity than normal. But ZERO activity? Not even one human milling about?To this day I consider myself lucky that old '99 camry could run on fumes, because had it sputtered out I have no idea what I would have done.What do you think?

@ArmchairEconomist01 man, i love middle america. but just judging from where it's located I don't think it was kimball. i went from Mount Rushmore diagonally south east through the state ....sort of, and into Missouri.

@ArmchairEconomist01 I heard of towns where polygamous Mormons live, I've always wondered if this one was one. I remember watching a TV show where some reporter tried to interview people, but nobody would talk. This would explain why nobody was outside.

@finnegan i suppose i should have taken a picture of the "jail", but i think it was some hyper-religious town. like, a combination of puritan new england and texas chainsaw massacre.
