@BroDrillard men who drink sugar during workouts have less of the hormone that makes fat available for your muscles to burn fat more effectively? Well, yeah, you don't need cortisol if you've got sugar and are at carb-burning intensity.deliberately boosting insulin to starve your muscles of fat? ... uh, maybe you're just slowing down without the OJ because you're holding back your effort in anticipation of the blood sugar drop from the more intense activity burning carbs. I don't think the hormones are driving this interaction really. Exercising itself lowers insulin: your body doesn't want to store energy while your energy demands are high.In the same way, I don't have any reason to doubt the data but I bet what's going on is more subtle and doesn't support general advice like "drink carbs to get gains".

@BroDrillard this "cortisol is the bad hormone, let's spike insulin" reading must be very confusing to people running on "insulin is the bad hormone". These kinds of worlds colliding is why fitness is more entertaining than you'd think.

I wonder how this generalizes to people in ketosis (ketogenic diet or carnivore diet), since our bodies are mostly running off ketones/fat instead of glucose/glycogen (and thus doesn't need to break down muscle to get more energy)

Yeah, my first thought was keto too. I don't know how that would work, I'm no expert. I just thought it is an interesting take for those who lift and not on a keto diet.
