@cjd well from this response I don't know if you are asking someone I can't see because of federation or if it's a general question, so I will answer. As long as your family is healthy and you aren't suffering greatly in economic terms, you have a job that doesn't slowly drain every inch of life out of you it's very amoral for not everything to be going great. So everything is great, because there's no other reasons I can think about that could affect one negatively other than those factors. Feelings of existencial despair and feelings of low self worth are ridiculous. Also we make stupid obstacles for ourselves out of boredom, so for me I am very very good.

@cjd my prior intuition was that:- specific impulse matters- the dominant factor is delta_V = v_exhaust * ln(m_takeoff / m_dry)- thrust-to-weight ratio is important to get off the pad, and probably has some impact on ascent through atmosphere that I don't understand- how to actually ascent through atmosphere is a mess of an integral that I can't hope to ever calculate

Weight needs to be in the formula somewhere, otherwise you could imagine a payload so heavy that the engines can't lift it at all. And you need to not only escape the gravity well, but also build enough inertia to get into orbit.

@cjd first of all, you don't need to escape the gravity well, unless you're going to another planet / somewhere else very far.Minimum orbit velocity is 1/sqrt(2) times escape velocity.If there wasn't this pesky atmosphere in the way, we wouldn't ascend at all, we could just accelerate sideways up to v1 and get into orbit 1m above Earth's surface.1/

@cjd And if there was no planed in the way, we would be already in orbit, just a very elliptic one.We'd be falling down to the center, going up on the other side, then falling back down again.We'd just need to slowly accelerate sideways to circularize, and we could do that with the tiniest thruster in the world, because we'd have all the time.But because the pesky planet is solid, we have to accelerate before we fall down.And because there's atmosphere, we need to get up high.

@cjd And that means instead of accelerating downwards, or sideways, or waiting until we're at peryapsis (closest point to the center of the gravity well, where you have the most velocity) and then accelerating in the same direction as our velocitywe have to do this stupid thing of accelerating upwards, which makes us waste energy to fight gravity.And also we can't go too fast because drag is like v^2, but that's not something I can calculate at this point.

Well, I decided to ask Dr. McCulloch about that one. Either he knows of a problem, or he doesn't, and if he doesn't that's also fine... It's entirely possible that the math does work, but you can't access it because at smaller gap distances the electrons just don't do the right thing...
