That's odd. I really enjoy my social media experience. So, clearly it *could* be fixed because good social media exists. https://mastodon.social/@arstechnica/115021945100161721

@futurebird I was thinking the same when I saw that article. Pretty sure they mean the corporate social media, because I'm having a great time here!

@futurebird of course Ars has the same engagement/advertising based business model. Most commercial media does and the thinking infects the public broadcasters and others too

@futurebird These days I'm only on Mastodon and I'm quite happy with my social media experience. Which makes it a target, or course.

@futurebird I disagree with their assessment of the problems. Like, if people are interested in ants, then someone who posts cool ant facts should get a lot of views. And I don't particularly need to hear more from anti-vaxxers, white supremacists, or the like. But I might concede that "algorithms" are a problem, as Mastodon seems to do better with people just boosting what they like.

@futurebird They aren't looking for enjoyment. They think you should be having constructive conversations with MAGAs.

@futurebird Centralized. Their model was centralized because it used an LLM. Purely flawed study. It actually made the point that decentralized is good.Note there was no mention of #Fediverse#AI #Insanity

@futurebird We must remain vigilant. Any time a liberal raises their head, we must deride, ridicule, and humiliate them into retreat. Liberals ruin everything. If we give them a toe hold, they'll start demanding rules to make this a safe space for their neoliberal blather.

@futurebird the endless "social media is terrible" articles of the last 20 years are essentially the same as the "tv is terrible" articles of the 1980s: they exist not to improve or change anything, but to normalize tolerance of garbage. Therefore, they need "it's noooooot the algorithm!!! you hafta blame the customer!!!".

@futurebird And based on the Ars Technica article, the study authors consider that a flaw in social media.

@futurebird I did find this interesting. However, I cant see me allowing myself to form conclusions from it. I am trying to give grace for their use of LLMs to make a simulation. However, to my lay ears, that just sounds like 1 step in a wider investigation. I dont know I would trust this until it goes into true human-involved experimentation. I'm not sure why even these experts are choosing to be interviewed without human examination in their methods yet.
