I've never seen a fat person smoke cigarettes but I've seen plenty of fat people pop zyns. clearly it's not the nicotine or the tobacco which helps, it's something else

@themilkman I just assumed it's a self image thing. smoking is inherently cool and badass and by smoking you are assuming the coolness which naturally wards off uncoolness like being overweight. you can do it without smoking but it's an easy gateway drug to being cool.

@veff I've seen them but there's definitely less fat people amongst the smoker population than amongst non smokers. I have a theory that the fat ones are the people who try to "cut back" on the amount of cigarettes they consume whereas all the skinny ones just smoke as many as they feel like without giving a shit. The ones restraining themselves fill the void with goyslop

@veff @themilkman This is barely valid when you are 16. These days I visibly cringe when I see anyone smoking, especially women. For me smoking is like nihilism - it's somewhat "natural" and "cool" for edgy teenagers (I know, I was one of them), but quickly becomes the opposite as you grow older.

@get @veff people smoke cigarettes to relieve the withdrawal symptoms created by the previous cigarette. so then by trying to cut down, they're going to feel worse than before they had their first cigarette. In this case, their appetite is going to be higher. the problem is that with dependence, the withdrawal symptoms cease to be relieved completely when continuing to smoke the same amount, which demands escalation. it's a cycle unless you break it completely.

@niobleoum @themilkman Well yeah, naturally, there's no such thing as a cool 16 year old. They ape being cool by smoking but it looks ridiculous. conversely, adults who don't smoke but are still cool are significantly cooler because you know they aren't relying on anything to make them cool, they just are.

@themilkman @veff IQOS are even worse than the regular cigs. They have that musky smell that is somewhat even more unpleasant. I can somehow tolerate vaping, since the smell isn't so attacking. As far as I'm concerned they are also the least damaging to use too.
