Took first steps with Meshtastic. I got HELTEC v3 boards. Some notes: - Flashing was easy, except Ubuntu has Chromium as snap, and it can't access serial ports without command line magic. Bad UX, Ubuntu! - Web configurator is quite good, but could be easier. Lot of parameters available. AFAIK some such as fixed location need to be set via python cli. - I set one device as router and it stopped responding on serial. Not sure if this is expected. #meshtastic #ubuntu

@cos Tip - dont use the Router preset unless you have a very very VERY good location - like the top of a mountain of a skrycraper."Client" is what you want :)

@selea i'm planning to put the router in a tree next to my house. It has quite good visibility over horizon. Not a mountain or skyscraper though.

@selea @cos If you study Finland's landscape and architecture you can easily see that we don't have mountains nor skyscrapers. We need to utilize the high stuff that we have instead of invent rules that can't work here.

@cos Seconding @selea's advice: the router/client names are a little misleading. A client will still rebroadcast and is a sensible role for a node in a tree. A router may rebroadcast INSTEAD of other nearby nodes so really should be used only in a truly excellent location. Sticking with the client role is generally the best option, even for nodes permanently kept in a decent spot.

@selea @cos Then you can probably appreciate the radio-only network that we have reaching from almost Stockholm to almost Arctic Circle.Without skyscrapers or mountains, but still many routers :)

@oh8hub @selea my nodes are in Tampere, but I might have possibility to install one at Jämi to help bridge the gap. Hints on long range node setup appreciated.

@selea @oh8hub i don't think solar would be feasible in Finnish winter. I have access to electricity and antenna pole at Jämi airfield.

@cos If you have access to power (and network), an ESP32 based one would work too.I think that my Heltect WSL V3 has been really really stable for the last 6 month it has been running. No hickups or anything. No OTA thou, but since you have power - maybe put if a Raspberry too?@oh8hub

@selea @oh8hub first, I got both nodes up. Even the router responds over bluetooth & serial now. Next I need to figure out case and power for it and get it to the tree. What would a raspeberry pi do related to a Meshtastic node?

@cos With a Pi, you can update your node without risking it with OTA@oh8hub

@selea @oh8hub can't I update it with any computer the same way? Not sure what a pi on node location would help. There is no internet or anyone present during winter.
