Odense-CPH. After an announcement in Danish and a synchronous smirk, other passengers are telling me we're supposed to move to the front of the train because this engine just can't anymore

#Interrail works great (in comparison) right up until the moment you run into a "seat reservation required" train, then all shit breaks loose. Routes and timetables are stored locally, and you only really have to go online once to generate the QR (sometimes when adding "journeys" too, but not really?). Reservations... go through the web app, which, naturally, you find broken both in firefox and in vanadium right when you need to catch the sleeper train. Aside from it wanting the mobile

Reservations force you *again* to plan stuff and tie you to specific departures, and are inherently online, which defeats the whole point of a "global pass"

So, the seat reservation service at eurail has never recovered, I was refused boarding in Malmoe, took a regional train getting off in some Hassleholm, intercepted the original heading to Stockholm, and found one of the seats that SJ.SE was still offering online. After we took off I was run into by the same controller from Malmoe, this time empathy won and she let me stay

Eurail/interrail support service followed up on my original request, saying "it SEEMS you tried the booking too late, the train was PROBABLY already sold out, that's why you saw the error, so we cannot compensate you for this trip". If you're a professional web developer you probably already guessed that the error in question is "Something went wrong", elaborated by "Try again or contact Support Service"

@nobody Have you tried buying seat reservations from Öbb instead? That's how I usually do it. https://shop.oebbtickets.at/

@nobodyI had this recently with Slovakia - the train was in the planner, but I couldn't make an advance reservation because they were 'unavailable' - I had to go to the Regiojet website to book.Reservation requirements are killing Interrail (and maybe that's what some companies /countries want?)

I have heard before that #railway operators may impose quotas on "reservation-only" offerings, and on #Interrail passengers specifically, but never saw it documented (never searched). #SJ, I'm pretty sure, doesComing back from #why2025

Update: seems like in case if #SJ it might be not malice, but crappy UI and broken integrations after all! Instead of the "seat only" button they let you toggle an option for a "travel card (10, 30, etc. days)" which unfolds a hidden menu for selecting #interrail. After entering a pass number (ostensibly, valid and activated; I didn't test) you get to see the seat prices

No idea where the Medlemsnummer comes from, I hope it's random and doesn't expose anything unbecoming if I buy a ticket in the same session. Again, great UI, great UX

PS The update specifically does not imply that I succeded in actually reserving a seat. For example, it's been a while since we've heard about our friend #worldpay https://mastodon.acm.org/@nobody/114301850641276045#KYC #AML #CFT #incompetence

@nobody That for SJ you should enter your Interrail pass as a "travel card" is of course something that anybody with experience could have told you had you just asked in advance. Or read for instance seat61.com.

@nobody If you read Swedish, there is the site https://trainfo.eu by @interrailinfosvenska . Less massive site than seat61.com, and specifically for #Interrail.
