Gender studies is clearly the new English degree 😅 All I heard throughout college was "English? What are you going to do with that - work at Starbucks?" It's possible that would have been my career path if I sat and waited for someone to drop a dream job in my lap.

@LadyButters if you're going to be a writer or editor, and you go to college, wouldn't you major in English?

@LadyButters they should have entrepreneurship courses for English majors who want to become writers. No one is going to recruit you for a writing job.

@progo Something akin to entrepreneurship courses would be a great solution. Almost none of my professors had ever set foot outside the ivory towers of academia in their careers, so there was little guidance from them. When my alma mater learned I was actually using my degree in a large corporation, I was invited to all kinds of calls and student networking events. Those invites stopped after I told the students that I didn't need grad school to get to where I am. 😅

@LadyButters 1998 to 2004 or so: my "computer science" program taught NOTHING about programming in a team or using bug trackers or version control.I minored in computer science and I learned how to be a programmer in a quasi-commercial software lab inside the school where my math professor mentor recruited me.

@progo It seems experience is the best teacher no matter the field of study. I can't even imagine what's being taught in either of our fields these days, inside those ivory towers.

@LadyButters College taks you where you're willing to pay huge dollars to be. Doesn't guarantee a living income. That's on you.
