It's been 6 days since i started writing my (semi) #SoloRPG journaling fiction with Ironsworn and it's greatly one of the most creative and yet engaging hobbies i've ever tried.I've chose to play with a slower but expanding paragraph based approach as it keeps me slowly engaged to the writing, but one of the biggest challenges is that you'd have to use all means necessary (rolling tables, finding references, etc.) to come up with what's next.

For years i've longed for a moment i could take to play tabletop RPGs, but considering they require to play along with other people, i was too desperate and begged most of the time myself to play it.But finding a group of my own tastes wasn't easy and that playing with total strangers wasn't for me. Had no one who knows anything about it, either.

I discovered solo RPGing during late 2023 when i heard of the famous Mythic GM Emulator, a detailed ruleset for playing solo with EVERY, yes, EVERY GODDAMN tabletop RPG ruleset you could ever imagine... and was able to grab a PDF copy of it on DriveThruRPG. I did read some of it, but never actually started using it, it's not something quick you could use it right away, but it felt well written.

The very first attempt was to play Terror Target Gemini, an italian old school based TTRPG taking place in an anachronistic western inspired setting. I used a simple GM emulator ruleset known as the Morning Coffee Solo Variations which felt adaptable for old school based games, but had to pause indefinitely due to the massive amount of writing i had to do, especially when doing combat scenes. It did work for a while, but i wasn't able to go far with it.

The kind of problem with using very mechanical systems such as Old School Essentials and similar games, but also Dungeons & Dragons 5e, is that when you get behind trying to verify fiction that correlates with the existence of mechanics, you have to keep an eye on the manual(s) to see if you happened to miss something. And of course, the fact that you are trying to play it alone you would have to play it as if it were an unfolding world through your eyes...

Roleplaying games were designed to be social games, so prepared material has to be done firsthand. But when you want to play it in solo, it would be nothng more than basically trying to be others by yourself, except it doesn't make sense when you ALSO know what comes after. It just doesn't work.So instead you need written systems that let you discover the outcome of the story by yourself, rather than direct everything in your hands as you please.

@AleF2050 I think you'll be pleased with my most recent RPG of the Day 2025 entry, titled Darkness, because that's the theme for today. Starforged is the mechanical inheritor of Ironsworn, also written by Shawn Tomkin. I thought I might just sit down and start writing with the barest minimum amount of setup I could possibly get away with, starting with a premise and a bare-bones character. It's actually kind of funny how intense and complex the situation can get starting from nothing and just being creative with the minimalist inspiration that it provides you.

@lextenebris I've been also playing Ironsworn too! And it's ridiculously fun.I used to try to get into programming or drawing, but as they were too hard for me to tackle at this time, i rediscovered solo RPGs out of pure boredom and was actually able to start writing stuff with it.It does require energies, though. And rather than taking long sessions, i would just spend the time i could up till i'd get tired before recharging for another set of minutes or next day.

@AleF2050 When you're playing solo, you can do that. Nobody is waiting for you to finish up what you're doing so that they can play. Nobody makes you sit there in the chair and keep writing. You play until you're tired of playing, and then you go do something else for a little while, come back, and play some more. You can do that six or seven times during the day if you're just writing for a little chunk every time. You can throw down and do an epic session of six or seven hours if you're feeling up to doing all that kind of writing. Solo play has the great advantage of making you independent of anyone else's choices, which is shockingly freeing.
