I'm seeing a lot of talk about migrating away from GitHub (finally). Yay good. Great. Go for it.I'm seeing a lot of talk of codeberg as the Foss alternative to migrate to. And yes codeberg are (at least to the best of my knowledge) good people doing good work. But.And I can't emphasise this enough. The whole fucking point of git is that it's decentralised version control. Fgs why are we centralising something that is by it's very design, decentralised? Seriously.

@quixoticgeek I don’t think that Torvalds would agree given that the first use of git was to provide him with a workflow for maintaining a centralized repository while allowing other people to efficiently build variations and submit changes to him to evaluate for inclusion in that repository. It’s that workflow; that works very well for the Linux kernel; that leads to a hierarchy of repositories with a central “official” version.

@MartyFoutsFuck, even the FidoNet accomplished this. As many "centralized" sites as you want, each building the total from distributed components. It was tiny and stupid and crude the the idea is there. But even most of the FidoNet folk dismantled s lot of that for the control actual centralization a few key folk got. Most people don't actually want actually decentralized anything. @quixoticgeek
