       For those fretting about Microsoft's inevitable further enshittification of the already shit Github, I can report (having ditched it the day Microsoft announced its acquisition) that Forgejo (https://forgejo.org - the #libre forge underlying Codeberg) is very easy to host and is superb to use. It's a few minute's work to migrate your code away from Github once & for all. Let Microsoft Github slump into the comprehensive ethics-free bitrot it's committed to without dragging you down with it.

       @rpm my understanding is that the original dev of Gitea wasn't keen on collaboration, so the rest of the community forked it, renaming it Forgejo, so it's mostly the same codebase, but moving faster and with better community support... It also has the benefit of being actively supported by https://codeberg.org, a commercially managed SaaS built on Forgejo.

       @lightweight OK, but how will anyone find my stuff? The biggest use of Github was networking effect.I run my own Forgjo server, but no one will ever find my stuff or submit a bug report there.

       @wagesj45 that's what web searches are for. Link to it from everywhere.

       @lightweight Yeah, I don't love it, but it seems that will be the solution. Gonna have to get used to a smaller internet if we want to opt out of the bullshittery. There will be pros and cons. The major con I predict is that most people won't opt out and we'll just end up as outsiders running pleasant-to-use but empty services.Oh well, times change!

       @wagesj45 I'm finding that I'm often 'ahead of the curve' in rejecting #bigtech services in favour of self-hosted #libre services... bragging rights don't put food on the table, but a proven track record of hosting services, and the ability to spin them for up when bigtech inevitably reveals their total depravity and people (finally) decide to peel off...

       @jeffmcneill sure, for those who want to leave it to the pros, Codeberg.org is a fine choice for sure. As is sr.ht.

       @sandro interesting - it's not something I use a lot, so haven't noticed this.
