"Mandrake is a harry potter reference."No. No. It's a plant. And the lore in that book is a reference to alchemist lore. This is worse than "silverfish are real animals?? I thought they were from minecraft" (which was cuter in a way)

@futurebird Sheeesh. Mandrake has been part of lore in a number of things in human history since probably even before the written word for reasons that should be pretty obvious. It even predates alchemy as a thing people made stories about...

@futurebird I thought he was in Little Orphan Annie, but no--just in the same (old) newspaper:"Mandrake began publication on June 11, 1934"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandrake_the_Magician

@futurebirdYep. And it is a fascinating one in terms of making it into a plant familiar.(Side note for those wondering, there is an "American Mandrake"...Mayapple...(Not AS poisonous as the European...but I still have to tell people not to make tea with it)

@futurebird I had a very similar experience when I explained the concept of the lich to a Harry Potter fan. They thought their TERF queen invented the notion with the no-nose dude.I try to remember that not everyone is widely read, not everyone is steeped in lore, and not everyone cares. They're wrong, but they're allowed to exist and be wrong. 😉

@futurebird I have a thought that mandrake was mentioned in Agatha Christie, or Dorothy L Sayers, or Margery Allingham.

@futurebird For the longest time Mandrake (yes, in English) was the name of a magician for me.I actually found it meant the plant "mandragore" in French when I started reading HP in English.https://thephantom.fan/phantom-mythos/mandrake-the-magician/
