Wouldn't it be nice if certain projects documented their dependencies properly so they don't waste your time trying to figure out what libraries you need installed to compile something?

@sally it took me like an entire day to figure out that a postgres module needed a specific configure line in order to build. their docs are good and say what to do, so maybe I'm the dummy here but they could've just defaulted it instead of sinking me in the hole of googling "x doesn't work" for hours on end

@sicp I've seen very few projects that have good documentation, many commit the same mistake of assuming people already knows how stuff needs to be setup and configured, which if it was true would mean they don't need to read documentation in the first place.

@sally one of the best documented programs ever made is GNU Emacs. nothing else comes close, source code, manuals, docstrings, it's all there one or two clicks away. it's awesome

@sicp Most stuff by GNU is amazingly well documented, specially Guix.

@sally info is a great format too. waaaaay better than manpages. It's actually older than manpages, it first showed up on the original EMACS on ITS. It's pretty much the exact same format, at least if you loaded the ITS manuals onto modern Emacs it'd probably work.
