There are a lot of warnings for CF / GF loaded 3D printing filaments, so I wanted to see what's going on.I printed a piece of Prusament PP-CF and it felt like a Kiwi fruit! The @FabLabMuc SEM Pics explain why: There are tons of exposed Carbon Fibers on the surface! It's pretty rough overall, doesn't look like any other 3D print I've seen before.I'm surprised how many of these fibers just stick out, like they're not embedded in the plastic at all!The last pic is of a broken edge.

@gigabecquerel @FabLabMuc do you know how that compares to a carbon fiber + resin composite that was cut and/or sanded down after hardening?

@wolf480pl @FabLabMuc Nope, I have zero experience with those.I'm guessing (hoping!) resin embeds the fibers better than whatever this is.

I don't know this for a fact, but I think filament doesn't bond that well with carbon fiber, compared to epoxy resin. Epoxy graphene is stronger than steel, but from what I've seen, PLA graphene is really unimpressive. My instinct is that if you want really strong stuff, it's better to print molds and then cast it from good composites.

@cjd @gigabecquerel @FabLabMuc right, but that requires a fiber-layup-and-resin-soaking skill in addition to the 3D printing skill. Which it makes sense to in if yiu're making model aircraft or rockets, but I see how someone who's mostly into 3D-printing and just needs one part that's a bit stronger would be tempted to use CF-containing filament

True enough. Something that rattles around the back of my head is how to make composites easier to cast. Layup sucks, it's always a manual process, carbon fiber just really doesn't "pour". I'm really intrigued by graphene because it's like 1/2 % of dust added to your liquid and it gives you a wildly stronger result. But there's other stuff you want in a composite that doesn't flow so well. Stuff like silicon carbide is incredibly cheap if you buy it in bulk, and the hardness is almost at the level of diamond, but these are typically sesame seed sized stones you need to somehow include into your mold...

@wolf480pl @cjd@pkteerium.xyz @FabLabMuc Ah, now I see where you're coming from!I'm not a mechanical engineer, so I can't speak to the properties of CF FDM versus CF Resin... when I need strong parts I just machine them out of metal 😅 Also, keep in mind, I have no idea of the fibers sticking out are a (health) issue at all, I was just very surprised by them. I can't imagine being exposed to them is good for you, but I simply have no knowledge in that regard.

@gigabecquerel @FabLabMuc OK so- clearly you're not seeing CJD's posts, his instance is probably blocked by yours- it was CJD that pulled it into the "what's practical to DIY" direction- I did get that you're unsure about safety of these sticking out fibers

I think even if they're using robots, it's still "manual" in the sense that a process expert needs to be monitoring it. What really makes it manual for me is that there's kind of an art to getting it right and if you screw up you get air bubbles and weakness...3d printing used to be "manual" but software has gotten so good that it's kind of broken through that barrier and become a "push the button" and walk away process. For me, "mix chemicals, pull vacuum, pour" can also be considered automatic because there really isn't any "art" to any of those steps. Anyone can mix a recipe on a scale, anyone can draw vacuum until the needle reaches a certain number, anyone can dump liquid into a funnel...

@cjd then there are those who wait until the resin has just the right viscosity and carefully paint with it... though IIRC that's more for fillets and stuff

This is exactly the kind of thing which is really frustrating because it's so hard to make it strong without resorting to artisanal techniques. If it can be done with chopped fiber then that's a big win, because chopped fiber can be stuffed into a mold, then the mold is squeezed, evacuated, and injected. Then the attachment to the rocket body can just be a mechanical connection such as a wedged dovetail, taper-lock, etc.Putting glue or a bolt on something which already self-aligns may be manual, but it's not artisanal.

Absolutely. It's not that I dislike craftsmanship, it's that I want to craft information (software, recipes, designs) which can be trivially copied and used over and over (and improved upon).A beautiful wooden coffee table is beautiful, but only for the person who has it in his living room, and only for its useful lifetime. A beautiful piece of software is beautiful forever, even if it falls into disuse, it may train some AI, or be the source of further inspiration.

@cjd @gigabecquerel @wolf480pl industry is moving toward automated fiber placement with pre-preg fiber. casting requires short fiber length and more binder to flow enough for molding so it's not as strong

@cjd @wolf480pl handmade furniture can be passed on to children and become an heirloom outlasting generations. There is no software equivalent.

Yes, handmade artisanal objects are valuable because they are one-of-one. There's no software equivalent because software does not have scarcity. That said, the probable impact on civilization of spending 10 years learning to make beauty out of wood is less than the impact of spending 10 years learning to make beauty out of information. So both are totally legitimate and I don't want to disparage the first, but I prefer the second.

@cjd @wolf480pl I appreciate software development, but I find it unlikely that anything I build will have any longterm benefit for humanity.I think I've just resolved to living my small little life and making a difference where I actually can instead of wasting my life ignoring those around me in hopes I can help people I don't know (this isn't to disparage anyone who finds this persuit attractive although it may sound that way).I think there is an argument to be made that some of the great things people have built with computers have over time been used in less than great ways. Finally, and perhaps most importantly for me, I find wood working far less stressful and frustrating than software development. There is no end to the job of maintaining a piece of software. A piece of furniture still requires some maintenance, but it won't need to be completely rebuilt because of a change in the protocol of mortis and tenon joints.
