So called ‘AI’ (LLM’s) /could/ be somewhat useful for translating or alt text but other than that I do not see a valid use of it on social platforms. I am here to connect with people, not robotsLet’s keep it human, the best we can :pusheentired:

@stux yeah, they're great as translators since they can include intent, grok in particular is good enough to replace search engines for most pedestrian use cases as well

@stux while I've gotten some decent results using LLMs to assist with translation, what I've seen for alttext has been uniformly bad. I'm not great at writing alt text, but at least I describe what I, the poster, photographer, and a real human being, care about in the picture.

@stux Yeah, I've been trying to use one with vision for translation. The accuracy is kind of low so it's a bit problematic, but it isn't as if previous image translation systems weren't also horrible...As it stands right now, I can basically take a screenshot of a game I'm running, then just paste it into KoboldCPP (I don't do online services) and it will at least try to get it right.

@ivesen @stux I would more like to self-host LLMs with Ollama and Open WebUI than to use xAI's/Musk's Platform.Besides that has Mastodon already the option to use DeepL as a translation source.

@stux @ivesen Using a CAX41 VPS and right now that is very good for something like Gemma3 with 4Billion Parameters (maybe even higher haven't tested that) and acceptible with gpt-oss-20b.
