Thanks Pamela!That is the kind of solid evidence that helps me to form an opinion. A 1000 page book that misses a basic piece of evidence is highly suspicious—much like Weinstein’s ignorance to the existence of BARDA.It makes sense to me that the blackmail operation could have been real, but then became more useful as distraction theater once the usefulness of the blackmail operation came to an end (Nobody new getting snared)

Eh, critique behind a paywall isn't all it's cracked up to be and MT has his own failings, errors and motives. I still have lots of respect for the long record of research Whitney has done over the past decade. On a personal note she was the first with any platform to pick up PROMIS scandal at Mint Press and follow up with my old friend, Inslaw founder Bill Hamilton and trail of Octopus that killed Danny Casolaro. Jeremy Kazmarov has continued at Covert Action but for all the people who find fault with what Whitney doesn't delve into I say go do better and build on the foundation that's informed so many.

So very wrong by so many measures.. PROMIS wasn't a hacking tool it was mostly DBMS.. In my Beltway Bandit era I worked on the prime contract RFP and recompete w Eagles.. so many swamp creatures involved were a big reason for me to walk away from DC but there is no doubt about the application or Maxwell backdoor.. read up on the history it's more evil than advertised.

I respect that you continually advocate for keeping the baby while ditching the bathwater. My advocacy is for things I know to be true, reliable sources and people where I have first hand experience, typically extended contact over years.. it gives me a cramp when sudden experts are minted upon discovery of subjects and especially hard to swallow when I have over two decades in a particular niche & they spout absurd conclusions from an information bubble w zero input. I'm old and tired and time alone shows what flashes & what truth endures & no interest in lectures by lesser informed sources indifferent to feedback.

How can you know if you didn't even watch it. I remember all this when it came out and thought it ludicrous. But there was the bbc, cnn, nyt all over it repeating for months on end the same nonsense. People are still repeating it even now after finding out first hand how bad the outright deception going on in government, msn and alt-msn actually is.

I Watched most of the episode, and Mark makes some good points about the difficulty of making a computer program that could hack all the different ancient government systems. He makes a good argument that technologically, the claims made by the creators is nonsense.HoWeber it doesn’t follow that the whole thing is a hoax. perhaps the cover story is BS, and perhaps the PROMIS software doesn’t rely on computerized hacking, but like you have already mentioned, relies more on traditional spy craft (dudes sneaking in with floppy discs).PROMIS, written in cobol, could just be a database of information collected by more traditional tricks, with a high falutin’ cover story with exaggerated, false claims of function.Not hard to imagine that government systems had back doors or were vulnerable to traditional spy craft. Perhaps PROMIS was just a cover story but the spying and hacking was real.I think we need to be cautious about declaring an operation as a total hoax just because some or most of a cover story is BS. Where there is smoke….

The claims regarding PROMIS software definitely was a fabrication. It was a stupid database with some word processing capabilities. that was it.On top of that it was also a story of glamour, mystery and high intrigue. Heavily promoted via all MSN channels who in retrospect didn't even do the most basic research regarding the central claims.Nothing has changed since then. Zero progress and the best reason for that is that it was all a big pile of crock to begin with. A hamster wheel leading to nowhere. It's worth noting that gnome's firecracker Whitney Webb just so happens to have a well established track record in salacious long winded hamster wheel operations.

In the 1970s the public- domain PROMIS was adapted to run on Burroughs, Prime, Wang and IBM machines, all of which used less-powerful 16-bit architectures.
