If you have a cat, does your cat seem to know what color its fur is? That is, does your cat (or cats) tend to sit on objects that match the color of their fur?

@futurebird My sister crocheted my cow cat a black-and-white afghan so he would have a blanket that matches him. He studiously avoids it.

@futurebird No. But, they clearly recognize differences in other cats.Maybe partly color/smell. The babies with a fluffy white mama who keep looking for fluffy black and white cats, etc...

@futurebird My cat favors books, paper, and dish towels, regardless of color.

@futurebird Void kitty who will consistently find the darkest possible spot on the rug in the middle of the floor to sit on, especially at night when she can be an extra special tripping hazard.

@futurebird I think it depends on whether kitty is currently in Ambush mode or Plotting, Will Attack Later mode... :stabbycat: 😸

@futurebird The much-missed Aoife looked like a void cat but her fur was composed of individual strands which were a neutral gradient from nearly white near the skin to void black on the ends.No matter what colour something was, her fur would show on it.

@futurebird I don't think it's intentional on their part, we just coordinate everything in our house with the orange cats that will end up on our next to them.

@graydon She must have worked so hard to achieve such exceptional results. #PicaTheCat commends her memory. She was very impressed by this.

@futurebird I am curious to know if cats who prefer to sit on or near things which match their coat are typically hunters, and/or cats who live with other cats.(I can't think of a reason for a cat to learn this habit without having either learned to hunt, or learned (play, hopefully)fighting with other cats.)

@futurebirdMine does, but it doesn't seem intentional. My floor just happens to be the same colour as my cat (I do not recommend bamboo/wood look vinyl flooring in a golden colour if you have a ginger tabby. Too many camouflaged trip hazard incidents)

@futurebird Usually, the cat will sit where the color is the opposite of its fur. Like, if you wear white, this black cat will absolutely come up and shed on you.Totally intentional. I loved that cat.

@futurebird Mine seem to prefer colors that complement their fur color for maximum shedding effectiveness.

@futurebird I'm pretty sure most cats choose to sit on things that have greatest contrast with the color of their fur. Our friends' white cat typically chooses the person in black slacks or skirt to sit on.

@futurebird I'm convinced that cats tend to have a little extra affinity for other cats with similar fur coloration. You can obviously find exceptions in both directions, but both me and my cousin have made remarks about it.

@futurebird My (born feral) rescue cat is black and most definitely prefers the darker shades. I have a red and black checkered floor, and she's seems to prefer the black parts. Or I might notice it more, because I more trip over her when she lies on the black parts :)
