Bought myself a thinkpad t460s. A mixture of limited budget and wanting a sturdy, but potentially underpowered machine just seemed to appeal to me.

@jae oh for sure, the keyboard is taking a little to get used to, the function key right where I want ctrl to be, but its not a huge issue. My desktop keyboard is a hhkb in US format, and the laptop is in british format (im British). My previous laptop was a lenovo ideapad 3, The difference in build quality is insane. The only laptop i've touched thats compared is a brand new elitebook 830 g8 or here abouts.

@kirbius hhkb were always great. i run a modified keychron-75% which ive dialed in and refuse to change. the newer the thinkpad usually build quality is worse. last years p14 series saw better modular improvements but things like weak hinges and their keyboard change still deter me. the t460/t470/t480 really are my favorite. only problems i ever face is finding batteries. had to lookup us vs uk layout. i use us everywhere since its common. as for the fn vs ctrl keys you can remap them how you like in linux or bsd. i know nothing about windows

@jae that's fair, The only thing holding me down to windows, is using a car scanner called VCDS, which uses a custom driver to connect to the car. There are projects on Linux, but I have not got the energy to install Linux today, then try the github project, if that doesn't work, I have to reinstall windows, which took forever yesterday.

@kirbius > VCDSyou'll find i encourage people to compute how they like. i used to build street-cars as a hobby, it required a windows laptop to interface with the ecu/bcu modules. in the future if you ever go 100% in, there's a lot of stuff you can do to have both whether it's dual-booting or using kvm/vm on the laptop with windows as the guest-os passing through the usb port. 💡

@jae yeah, im leaning towards dual booting mostly because im sleptical of performance through a vm but ill be pleasantly suprised if it can
