it is curious how many people feel they need to ask me why #curl is not moving off #GitHubThe cold and boring answer is money. GitHub sponsors us with a crapload of CI infra that there is no other company even close to doing. So while they may be an AI-first delusional company, they help our project so much more than all other hosting sites combined. It would be reckless and irresponsible of us to ignore this.

@bagder So the question is, if GitHub tried to coerce you to do sth stupid (eg. "start using AI code review or we'll decrease your CI quota") how far would they need to go before you switch?

@wolf480pl I don't find that a particularly interesting question because it's an unlikely extreme. Everything in life is a balance of pros and cons, and so is running an Open Source project. We make decisions every single day that impacts how the project looks like tomorrow. We will continue to make such decisions until the project dies. A service we use going rogue is just one thing that can happen, and one I consider is reasonably unlikely. We react. We overcome. We struggle on.

I don't think it's that much of a concern because this is just not in their business model. Their business model is to be a super cool fun place for open source developers, and offer them everything they want and never push them around, but then to go to companies and bill the crap out of them for access to the same tools that everyone is now addicted to.

@cjd @bagder I vaguely remember them making it impossible to turn off some AI feature on a per-repo level so you know...

@bagder yeah it is unlikely... I guess I just had too much ISO27001.

AFAIK the github AI is something you as a vscode user need to enable to use. So if it can't be turned off on a per-repo basis, that's more just that you can't forbid other people from using AI on your code - which actually if you host your code elsewhere, you can't forbid it either. They can just import your code into vscode and go to town on it...

@cjd I think it was some other feature that was in the web interface, maybe related to issues or sth... but I may be misremembering

@wolf480pl @bagder Based on their OP, I’d say it would take getting a DM from any random middle manager from GitHub to convince them to have cURL send your SSN directly to the FBI along with the ears of your first born child. Not a good look.

@oberstenzian I see how you may get that idea if that's the only post of @bagder that you've seen, but I find it unlikely that he'd agree to such a thing.

@wolf480pl @bagder I’ve been following him for a minute. I’m sure he won’t kill our firstborns… but when it comes to capitalism and tech, for me, that surety is very tenuous. I’ve lived too long to have naive ideas about how Westerners - especially “white” men - conduct themselves, especially now. As soon as a value can be compromised they’ll be the first to do so while claiming to hold fast to said values. No compelling reason to think @bagder is any different than anyone else.
