#TTRPG #DnD #TravellerIt bugs me when people denigrate other people's fantasy, especially when it's deeply unfounded. What is the fantasy of the D&D character compared to the Traveler character? What is the ultimate epic expression of both?https://grimtokens.garden/Thoughts/The+Fantasy+-+DnD+vs+Traveller

@phaedral I mean, it's GURPS, so you know it's well-researched. And it's Lensmen, which means that your power level top-end is looking at the power cosmic and sneering a little bit at the upstart. As power fantasies go, it's pretty awesome. As systems go to actually make use of that power fantasy, GURPS was definitely not my choice. But it is what it is.

@lextenebris Great response! My point was more that Traveler was no less inspired by characters such as vanBuskurk than D&D was by Conan.

@phaedral Oh sure, but the Traveller material itself doesn't lean into that particular side of the fantasy particularly heavily, which is a total shame because pushing hard on that straight-up, over-the-top military fantasy is also really neat. And yes, I know there was plenty of material that spoke about it, but very little in the published adventure side of things.(I would argue that D&D wasn't nearly as influenced by Robert E. Howard as a lot of the adherents like to put forward. If the sword and sandals experience is what you're looking for, there are way better games for pursuing that, including On Mighty Thews, but at this point we're just getting into finding the right tool for the right job, which I love to do, don't get me wrong.) https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/171413/on-mighty-thews

@lextenebris What I liked about pre-gurps "labyrinth" was the vibe of universality which eventually evolved into gurps. I agree D&D probably owes more to table to civil war reenactment than Conan. I can see kids who staged a table top Appomattox setting up a table "Battle of the Five Armies" from The Hobbit.Anyway, I never felt limited in any system.
