Due to a years long campaign of gradual exposure and tolerance building my husband now likes spicy food enough that he will fetch "his" hot sauce of his own volition and spice up the eggs or stew. :)When I met him he struggled with too much pepper (granted I grind it fresh) and this filled me with trepidation about the future of our relationship. It remains essential he does not use *my* hot sauce, but the future looks bright!Love finds a way!

I made him mashed potatos with pepper when we first started dating and he asked "is this spicy?"No."Oh no it *is* spicy!""How. The pepper? The pepper? That's not even ... that doesn't even COUNT."

@futurebird My wife is czech. We've been married for 6 years and she still doesn't like pepper or anything even mildly spicy. However she does like to put salt on everything

@futurebird That's an awfully difficult starting point. Glad to hear you're managing to build and maintain a healthy relationship despite such fundamental challenges.

@WesternInfidels He's still scared of my hot sauce, but I think he could enjoy it now. I'm not some kind of spice queen. It's just a littler hotter than Tabasco. Nothing crazy. Doesn't even make the eyes water.

@eliza I guess it's an eastern Europe thing? His mom is from Ukraine and at first I was not very impressed with her cooking. But, I've come to like the cabbage and potato thing she makes even though it's very mild. If you cook the cabbage right it can be very sweet.I don't think there is hope for her and any spices though.

@futurebird I've had friends who could detect the smallest fragment of chopped ginger in a dish. "That's just baseline for this recipe. I didn't add anything *hot* to it..."

@futurebird Same with my spouse! He wants to try everything, which is nice, but if I'm making a meal it needs to be something we can both eat. I have built up his tolerance quite a bit, but my personal hot sauce collection has also flourished. It's also led to me making more chili, because if it's spicy, he'll just add sour cream. The things we do for love!(I call him Mr. Candy Mouth, hehehehe.)

@futurebird @eliza My wife is American Polish and my SIL is Polish Polish. I do love some of the doughy and savory and sour food in the repertoire but I couldn't live on it happily. And, after ten years of marriage, my wife now reaches for the chili crunch container unbidden.https://thelalasauce.com/

@futurebird in the early 2000s I worked with a guy from Argentina who pointed out they never would have had pepper shakers on tables. "Too spicy".I think about that a lot.

@futurebird I did something similar with my wife. She used to complain about a single jalapeño in a dish that we were both eating. Now she puts chilli sauces in / on things herself. But she's half cantonese and grew up eating instant noodles that, as far as I can tell, are seasoned with actual lava. My mouth is on fire if I put any of the water from them in my face. They are far more spicy than anything I cook. But those are, apparently, a different kind of hot and so don't count.

@shom @WesternInfidels *pushes up hipster spectacles*I tend to go for small-run obscure brands that I find at farmers markets and church picnics. My current favorite is a BBQ sauce in a repurposed jam jar that has "GHOSTY" in all caps written over the torn of label in sharpie that my mom brought me from the church BBQ.

@futurebird In Minnesota; the restaurants have a different spice scale than I got used to in California."Minnesota spicy" is maybe "medium". For "California spicy" one has to order "very very hot".
