#TTRPG #RPGaDay2025 #TravellerThere's a message on the cover of the original Traveller. Almost everybody has read it, but have you really thought about it?https://grimtokens.garden/Articles/RPG+a+Day/2025/Day+04+-+Message

@lextenebris By the time I was old enough to buy my own rpgs, I was already hooked on Traveller thanks to listening to my older brother's tales of the game with his friends. When I did buy it, it was the Starter Edition that was available, so I never got the unbiased experience with the first edition like you describe. I never even heard of the Beowolf until years later. I do remember that the artwork in the SE drew me in quite a bit though.

@murdoc Well then you may really enjoy an article that I'm working on right now that, unfortunately for me, this short bit actually inspired me to start working on. Also, unfortunately for me, it ended up being a lot more work than I thought it was going to be, and today I just didn't have the time to sit down and work on it like I should have, or rather, like I wanted to. Also, it's already over 5,000 words, so you can tell this is going to be a bit of a monster of a post note. (Don't worry, it'll be over on the digital garden and not just dumped on Mastodon).

@lextenebris I can relate to all that. I don't have a weblog, but I am on a Mastodon instance with a 10,000 character limit that I take advantage of. :BlobCatSmiley: And Traveller is still one of my favorite rpgs (even if I can't get people to play it :blob_cat_cry: ), so I'm happy for content whenever it comes out. :blob_cat_sip:

@murdoc Oh, a mere 10,000 characters. How often I exceed that limit. That's one of the things that does amuse me about the modern incarnation of X. For $3 a month, you can have 25k post lengths, which is actually quite amazing. A pretty good deal overall, though, in kind of a messy neighborhood. I'll give you a little insider info on what I have coming down the pipe. I love Traveller. I have a vast amount of Traveller stuff. I have things for Traveller that I literally could not find online, linked anywhere. So I had to put it up so that I could reference it myself within the article.I'm effectively showing how to play old-school, first-edition Traveller, but using the Starforged setup and mechanics, augmented by the Sundered Isles mechanics, and with only one third-party expansion, Ancient Wonders, which I need purely because the original Traveller's Solar System Creation System was very much hard science-directed, and I needed a generative system to do that.I think you'll actually end up enjoying the results if you remember old-school Traveller, and you might even end up deciding you want to pick up Starforged because it can let you create something similar with more accessible, more modern mechanics. But first, I have to finish the article.

@lextenebris Thanks. I'm sure it will be interesting. I also look forward to seeing all these other resources you mention. :BlobCatSmiley: I actually didn't play Classic all that much, because before I could find other players, I ended up getting MegaTraveller, and that's been my favorite edition ever since. There's a whole story about how I got into playtesting for T5, and how that led to me designing my own game from scratch, but I'll leave that unless you want to hear it.
