In my sci-fi story there is a massive data center and I thought about making it "10km wide" but then scaled it back a bit because that seemed absurd. (A 4km data center full of ants is still very exciting.)This is the data center Zuckerberg wants to build. I worry that when these guys become CEO and stop working building things and writing code they can fall for some of their own hype. What (if anything) do you think a data center of this size could do that current centers cannot?

@lffontenelle I mean I suppose it might be economic activity like when you pay a person to dig a hole and fill it up again ... that can help the economy. However the hole will aerate the soil and it won't spew carbon for years after you dig it.

@futurebird The US tech broligarchy have a mindset fixated on "bigger is better", and throwing more and more money at every problem. It's extremely destructive, careless and often counter-productive as well, as it results in s̶u̶b̶-̶o̶p̶t̶i̶m̶a̶l̶ ̶ monstrously inefficient solutions for everything.

@futurebird fail in exponentially more and creative ways. While also failing to really deliver any value to anyone not a supplier to it. The suppliers will make billions. Everyone else will suffer outages, failure to meet expectations and increased fragility and ways to fail catastrophically All while weird problems will be found. For very minimal gain In short it’s idiotic. (I’ve been in big data centers that ran important parts of the economy. They were much smaller)

@futurebird this inspired a thought… they should build data centers in deserted malls. They have the power capacity, the climate control, and the structure is all there. Sure it won’t be a giant rectangle, so the grids will be a little angular, but so what? It’s cheap empty land.

@futurebirdAs someone who once managed the networks for 250k sq ft of DC space just before and during the DotBomb years, the ZuckStar is a phenomenally bad idea.Eventually, all projects scale back. All infra needs to be repurposed. All infra needs to be refitted. All sites need redundancy. Huge projects like this have none of that future proofing in mind.
